As a young boy, I thought the outside world lived in outer space.
Every summer at my grandma’s house, which sat close to the airport, I’d drag my older cousins to watch planes take off. Morning and evening. One summer, my uncle surprised us — he paid for all of us to actually fly, just for the experience. I remember the excitement. I remember praying at every hint of turbulence. But mostly, I remember being in absolute wonder.
I was six months old when I first traveled. My father carried me through the Himalayas in a backpack-baby carrier, and though I can’t remember those mountains, they’re etched in me somewhere.
Growing up, travel wasn’t a choice — it was a way of life. Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Egypt, Israel, Canada, Mexico. We traveled across continents, making friends from around the world. I learned that connection doesn’t require a shared language, just curiosity.
There are two ways to travel. One packs in as many places as it can, ticking landmarks
off a checklist. The other knows that it isn’t how much you see, but how deeply you feel.
We’re decidedly in the second camp.
